Vicente Enrique y Tarancón

Spanish cardinal and archbishop of Madrid. He played a crucial role during the Spanish Transition, advocating for reconciliation and democracy, being a key figure in the modernization of the Catholic Church in Spain.

He completed his ecclesiastical studies in Tortosa and earned a doctorate in Theology in Valencia. He was ordained a priest in 1929. He served as Archpriest of Vinaroz (1938), Bishop of Solsona (1942–1964), Bishop of Oviedo (1964–1969), Archbishop of Toledo (1969–1971), and Archbishop of Madrid (1971–1983). He was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1969. He took part in the Second Vatican Council.

He worked actively in Catholic Action and served as rapporteur of the Synod of Bishops in Rome. He was President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference until 1983. He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy (1970) and a member of the Valencian Council of Culture, as well as President of its Cultural Promotion Commission. He was the author of numerous books and essays, countless newspaper and opinion articles, and a great number of papers and lectures.
