Valentín Fuster
Spanish cardiologist known for his research in cardiovascular diseases. He has been president of the American Heart Association and director of the Carlos III National Center for Cardiovascular Research in Madrid.

Valentín Fuster Carulla (Barcelona, 1943), cardiologist, earned both his medical degree and doctorate from the University of Barcelona, and moved to the United States in the 1970s to complete his training. He spent several years at the Mayo Clinic (Minnesota), first as a resident and later as a professor of medicine and cardiology specialist. In 1981, he joined the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York) as Chief of Cardiology, and from 1991 to 1994, he served as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (Boston) and Chief of Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
He is currently the Director of Mount Sinai Heart, the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute, and the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Center for Cardiovascular Health. He also serves as President of the Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC Carlos III) in Madrid and is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
He has held prominent leadership roles, including President of the American Heart Association, President of the World Heart Federation, Member of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Advisory Council, and Chair of the Fellowship Training Directors Program of the American College of Cardiology.
His contributions to cardiovascular medicine are reflected in over 500 scientific articles on coronary disease, atherosclerosis, and thrombosis, and in his editorial work on two major cardiology textbooks: The Heart and Atherothrombosis and Coronary Artery Disease. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Nature Reviews Cardiology journal, dedicated to cardiovascular medicine.
In recognition of his work, Valentín Fuster has received numerous prestigious awards and distinctions, including the Andreas Gruntzig Scientific Award from the European Society of Cardiology (1992), the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American College of Cardiology (1993), the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research (1996), the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Heart Association (2003), and the Distinguished Researcher Award from the Inter-American Society of Cardiology (2005).
