Santiago Calatrava Valls

Spanish architect, civil engineer, and sculptor known for his innovative works that fuse architecture, engineering, and art. He is recognized worldwide for designs such as the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum in Valencia and the Oculus in New York.

Born in Benimàmet, Valencia.

1956-1961

Elementary education in Valencia.

1959-1960

Took evening classes at the “Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Burjassot”, Valencia.

1961-1968

Baccalaureate education in Valencia.

1968-1969

Studied Fine Arts in Valencia.

1969-1973

Studied Architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Valencia.

1973

Did his end of degree project on urban planning in Valencia.

1975-1979

Studied a doctorate degree in Technical Sciences at the Architecture Department at ETH Zurich with his thesis on "The Pliability of three-dimensional structures”.

Teaching assistant at the Institute of Structural Engineering at ETH Zurich, Department 1.

Teaching assistant at the Institute of Static Planes and Lightweight Structures at ETH Zurich, Department 3.

Began his own architecture and civil engineering office in Zurich.

1981

Earned a Doctorate Degree in Civil Engineering in Zurich.
