Norman Foster
British architect recognized for his innovative and sustainable designs. Founder of Foster + Partners, he has created iconic buildings such as the Reichstag in Berlin and Apple Park in California, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary architecture.
Norman Foster was born in Manchester in 1935. He studied Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Manchester. After graduating in 1961, he was awarded the Henry Fellowship to attend Yale University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Architecture.
In 1967, Norman and Wendy Foster founded Foster Associates in the living room of their two-bedroom flat. Between 1967 and 1971, they employed between 10 and 20 people.
Norman Foster worked with R. Buckminster Fuller on a series of projects between 1968 and 1983. Twenty-five years later, in 1992, Foster Associates became Sir Norman Foster and Partners, an international firm whose work has received, since its inception, more than 60 awards and distinctions for its excellence and has won 14 international design competitions. Currently, it has offices in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Nîmes and Tokyo, and employs 180 architects, designers, model makers and their respective teams.
In 1983, Norman Foster was awarded the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture and in 1990 he was knighted during the Queen’s birthday celebration.
In 1991, he received the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture, the Gold Medal from the French Academy of Architecture and an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London. More recently, he received the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York.

He is a fellow of the Académie Royale de Belgique and a member of the Ordre d’Architectes Français.
Norman Foster has lectured worldwide and has taught architecture in the UK and the USA. He has served as Vice President of the Architectural Association in London and is a member of the education council and an examining professor at the Royal Institute of British Architects.
