Japanese Aikido master and the second Doshu of the Aikikai organization. He continued and expanded the legacy of his father, Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido. Kisshomaru was instrumental in the global spread and organization of modern Aikido.

Born in Ayabe (Kyoto) in 1921, he is the third son of the Founder of Aikido. He graduated with a degree in Political Science from Waseda University in 1946. He is the General Director of the Hombu Dojo of the Aikikai Foundation and the current Doshu—an honorary title inherited from his father, Master Morihei Ueshiba. He is also President of the International Aikido Federation, a member of the Nippon Budokan Foundation, and a member of the Japanese Diplomatic Association. He holds the Silver Medal awarded and conferred by Emperor Hirohito in recognition of his work in spreading Japanese culture.

What is Aikido?

In essence, Aikido is a modern expression of the Japanese martial arts. It is orthodox in that it inherits the martial and spiritual tradition of ancient Japan, first recorded in the literary and historical works of the 8th century, the Kojiki (“Records of Ancient Matters”) and the Nihongi (“Chronicles of Japan”).

The Founder of Aikido, Master Morihei Ueshiba, was born on December 14, 1883, in Tanabe, Kii Province.
