Karlheinz Brandenburg

German electrical engineer recognized for his crucial role in the development of the MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer III audio compression format, commonly known as MP3.

Karlheinz Brandenburg (Erlangen, Germany, 20 June 1954) sound engineer, who contributed to the audio compression format MPEG Audio Layer 3, (MP3).

From 1989 to 1990 he worked with the American company AT&T Bell Laboratories, in ASPEC and MPEG-1 Layer 3. Brandenburg is a fellow of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the director of the working group committee of AES standards SC-06-04 Internet Audio Delivery Systems. He has registered 27 patents in the United States as co-inventor.

He was appointed Doctor Honoris Causa by agreement of the Governing Council in a session held on 6 March 2014 upon proposal of the School of Telecommunications Engineers, and was awarded such honour on 24 June 2014.
