Jürgen Schadeberg

A German photographer, he is known for documenting South African life and culture during apartheid. He photographed key moments such as the Defiance Campaign and the treason trial, as well as figures such as Nelson Mandela and influential jazz musicians.

Jürgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931. He worked as a photography fellow in Hamburg during his teenage years for the German press agency. In 1950, he emigrated to South Africa and became Chief of Photography, Graphic Editor and Art Director of Drum Magazine.

Known as the "Father of South African Photography", he is a leading figure not only within the field of photography in that country but also worldwide. His work, which spans for 65 years, consists of a collection that exceeds 150,000 negatives.

He continues to actively work on important photographic projects, books and exhibitions, from itinerant international shows to the creation of his own paper archive. He currently works in Berlin, Paris, South Africa and Spain. In 2014 he was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universitat Politècnica de València.
