Juan Roig Alfonso
Spanish businessman born in Valencia in 1949. He is known for being the president and main shareholder of Mercadona, the largest supermarket chain in Spain. Roig has led the transformation and expansion of Mercadona, making it a leading company in the food distribution sector in Spain.
Juan Roig Alfonso was born in Valencia in 1949. He is married to Hortensia Herrero and is the father of four daughters. He studied at the University of Valencia where he graduated in Economics in 1973 and completed the PADE programme at IESE.
In 1975 he joined his father’s company, Cárnicas Roig, which had a division of butchers and self-service shops, which, at that time, had eight stores in the province of Valencia of approximately 200 m2 each. On 17 October 1981, he took over the management of the Company, which began its activity as an independent company of the Roig Group Companies, giving rise to the Mercadona project.
Juan Roig is a graduate grocer who, in 1993, completed a change of course of the company, leading the implementation of the Total Quality Model, whose basic pillar is the satisfaction of the five components of the company: the customer (internally called “the Boss"), "The Worker", "The Provider", "The Society" and "The Capital". Mr Roig is currently its President and under his management, Mercadona has more than 1,000 supermarkets and 59,000 full time employees.
He is currently Honorary President of "The Spanish Association of Commercial Codification" (AECOC), President of the "Institute of Family Business", Vice President of the "Spanish Association of Self-Service Shops and Supermarkets" (ASEDAS), and Vice President of the "School of Entrepreneurs "(EDEM). He also holds the High Distinction of the Valencian Government.
