Juan Ignacio Cirac Sasturain

Spanish physicist outstanding in quantum information theory and quantum computing. He has worked at the Max Planck Institute and the University of Innsbruck, contributing more than 500 articles to leading journals in his field.

Acknowledged for his research in quantum computation and quantum optics, framed within quantum theory and theoretical physics. Director of the Theoretical Division of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, in Garching, Germany. His research focuses on the quantum theory of information.

He has developed a computational system based on quantum mechanics that is expected to enable a much faster design of algorithms in the future. According to his theories, the quantum computer will revolutionise the information society by creating more efficient and secure communications.

He was appointed Doctor Honoris Causa by agreement of the Governing Council in a session held on 25 July 2014 upon proposal of the University Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications, and was awarded such honour on 3 September 2015.
