Francisco Lozano Sanchís
Spanish painter and academic, known for his mastery of watercolor and Mediterranean landscaping. His work was internationally recognized and exhibited in numerous countries, standing out for its stylistic rigor and its influence on Valencian painting of the twentieth century.
He was born in Antella (Valencia) on September 19, 1912.
In 1928, he entered the San Carlos Higher School of Fine Arts in Valencia.
In 1932, he was awarded a scholarship by the Beato Juan de Ribera Major College in Burjasot.
In 1933, he received a grant from the Spanish Government to study at the Alhambra Painters’ Residence in Granada.
In 1935, he was again sponsored by the Beato Juan de Ribera Major College to further his training in Madrid. In March, he participated in the Regional Exhibition of Painting, Sculpture and Decorative Arts in Valencia.
In December 1939, he took part in “Drawing, Watercolor and Mediterranean Engraving” organized by the Provincial Delegation of Fine Arts in Valencia.
In January 1942, he held a solo exhibition at the Syra Gallery in Barcelona. In May, he participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona and, in November, he presented a solo exhibition at Sala Mateu Gallery in Valencia.
In February 1944, he presented another solo exhibition at Sala Mateu Gallery in Valencia. In March, he held an exhibition titled “Flowers and Still Lifes” at Sala Mateu and, in April, he held a solo exhibition at Salón de Arte Gallery in Bilbao.
In January 1946, he held a solo exhibition at Estilo Gallery in Madrid.
In 1947, the Spanish State acquired his painting Paisaje del Perelló for the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia. In December, he held a solo exhibition at Sala Mateu Gallery in Valencia. That same year, he participated in “Contemporary Spanish Art,” organized by the General Directorate of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In 1948, he was awarded the Second Medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition for his works Pueblo and La Noria. In February, he held a solo exhibition at Estilo Gallery in Madrid and, in May, participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid. In November, he won the Grand Prize at the “Painting, Sculpture and Engraving Competition” organized by the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.
In March 1949, he held a solo exhibition at Sala Mateu Gallery in Valencia. In May, he participated in “The Eleven Best Works of Art. Fifth Exhibition of the Academia Breve de Crítica de Arte” in Madrid. In September, he held a solo exhibition at the Town Hall of Villena (Alicante) and, in December, won the Grand Prize at the Círculo de Bellas Artes Competition in Madrid.
In January 1950, he held a solo exhibition at the Town Hall of Alicante and, in May, participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid. He also took part in “Spanish Art” organized by the General Directorate of Cultural Relations in Cairo, Egypt, and in the Venice Biennale in Italy.
In 1951, he received the National Grand Prize “José A. Primo de Rivera” for his painting Lavanderas, won the First Medal at the Art Biennale of the Kingdom of Valencia, and was granted a scholarship by the French Government for further studies. In April, he held a solo exhibition at Dardo Gallery in Madrid, in July participated in the First Biennale of the Kingdom of Valencia at the Ibero-American Institute in Valencia, and in September held a solo exhibition at La Pinacoteca Gallery in Barcelona. In October, he took part in the First Hispano-American Art Biennale at the Instituto de Cultura Hispánica in Madrid and, in December, participated in “A Decade of Modern Art, 1940–1950” at Biosca Gallery in Madrid. That year he also received the “Alicante Provincial Council Award” in Alicante.
In 1952, he was awarded the First Medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition, resided in Paris, and was named Honorary Member of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. He participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid in May, in “The Eleven Best Works of Art” at the eighth exhibition of the Academia Breve de Crítica de Arte in June, in the “1952 Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art” in Santander in August, and again in the Venice Biennale in Italy.
In 1953, he served on the jury for the Grand Prize “José A. Primo de Rivera,” participated in “Current Spanish Art” at the Instituto de Cultura Hispánica in Santiago de Chile in July, in “Contemporary Spanish Painting” at the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru, in October, and in “Free Art” in Paris in December. He also held a solo exhibition at Biosca Gallery in Madrid and participated in the Biennale of the Kingdom of Valencia.
In 1954, his father, Francisco Lozano Mateu, passed away. He served as a jury member for the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid on behalf of the Fine Arts Schools. In March, he participated in the “Fiestas de la Magdalena Exhibition” at the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Valencia in Castellón. In May, he exhibited at the Second Hispano-American Art Biennale in Havana, Cuba, and in July, he participated in the “Homage to Joaquín Sorolla” at the Benimar Exhibition Hall in Valencia. That year, he also participated in the Venice Biennale at the Spanish Pavilion.
In 1955, he underwent major surgery and won the Uruguay Prize at the Third Hispano-American Biennale. He was named Full Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, appointed Professor of Color at the Higher School of Fine Arts of San Carlos, Valencia, and served on the jury of the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid and the “Autumn Salon” in Valencia. In February, he participated in the “Tribute to Eugenio d’Ors” at the last exhibition of the Academia Breve de Crítica de Arte. He took part in the “Anthological Exhibition of the Second Hispano-American Art Biennale” in Mérida, Venezuela, and “Mediterranean Art” organized by the General Directorate of Fine Arts in Alexandria, Egypt. He also exhibited in “Contemporary Spanish Painting and Sculpture” at the Hispanic-Arab Institute of Culture, touring Damascus, Jerusalem, Ankara, Baghdad, Cairo, Istanbul, and Amman, and in “Contemporary Spanish Painting and Sculpture” at the Ministry of Education of Lebanon in Beirut. He also participated in the Third Hispano-American Art Biennale at the Instituto de Cultura Hispánica in Barcelona.
In 1956, he delivered his inaugural address at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, Valencia, titled “Impressionism and Expressionism: A Passionate Evocation of Their Most Representative Masters,” and donated his painting La playa. He served on the jury for the National Competition for the Decoration of the Royal Theatre of Madrid and the “Autumn Salon” in Valencia, and was honored in his hometown, Antella. In January, he participated in “Contemporary Spanish Painting and Sculpture” at the Hispano-Hellenic League in Athens, Greece; in February, in the “Anthology of the Hispano-American Art Biennales” at the Instituto de Cultura Hispánica in Geneva, Switzerland; and in May, in “Some Twentieth Century Spanish Paintings” organized by The Arts Council of Great Britain in London. That year, he again participated in the Venice Biennale at the Spanish Pavilion.
In 1957, he received the National Prize Ciudad de Salamanca for First Medals and participated in the Centennial National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid. He served as a jury member for the “Autumn Salon” in Valencia and collaborated with the Directorate General of Fine Arts in Madrid. That year, he also took part in The Landscape in Contemporary Spanish Painting, organized by the Directorate General of Cultural Relations in Paris, France.
In March 1958, he held a solo exhibition at the Center for North American Studies in Valencia, and in April, he participated in the “Universal Exhibition of Brussels” organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brussels, Belgium.
In April 1959, he took part in 20 Years of Contemporary Spanish Painting organized by the Directorate General of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Portugal.
In 1960, he served as a jury member for the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona and for the awarding of Fine Arts scholarships by the Juan March Foundation. In February, he held a solo exhibition at the Exhibition Hall of the Directorate General of Fine Arts in Madrid and participated in Anthology of Awards from the Alicante Provincial Council at the Provincial Savings Bank in Alicante. In July, he participated in 5 Valencian First Medals at Braulio Gallery in Valencia, and in September, in the Ninth Painting Exhibition at the Town Hall of Monóvar (Alicante).
In January 1961, he participated in Homage to Velázquez at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid; in March, in Art and Charity at the C.I.N.H. San Vicente Ferrer in Valencia; in June, in Homage to Zabaleta from His Painter Friends at the Sociedad Amigos del Arte in Madrid; in August, in the First Contemporary Art Exhibition at the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián; and also in the First Medals Exhibition at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.
In 1962, he took part in The Spanish Landscape at the Aula de Cultura in Madrid.
In February 1963, he held a solo exhibition at Biosca Gallery in Madrid. In March, he participated in 20th Century Valencian Painters at Estil Gallery in Valencia, in an exhibition benefiting the San Pedro Pescador Home in Valencia, and in October, in Contemporary Spanish Art at the Spanish Products Exhibition in Mexico. He also participated in Contemporary Spanish Art organized by the Directorate General of Fine Arts in Madrid.
In 1964, he was appointed board member of the International Association of Plastic Artists (UNESCO) and served as a jury member for the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid. In January, he held a solo exhibition at the Association of the Press of Valencia, and in February, participated in Masters of Contemporary Spanish Painting at Quixote Gallery in Madrid. In September, he held a solo exhibition at Moisés Álvarez Gallery in Palma de Mallorca. He also participated in the inaugural exhibition Contemporary Spanish Artists at Juana Mordó Gallery in Madrid and in 25 Years of Art in Spain at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.
In March 1965, he held a solo exhibition at Sala Sta. Catalina–Ateneo de Madrid in Madrid. In April, he participated in Spain from Every Province at the National Publishing Exhibition Hall in Madrid; in May, in the Second National Exhibition Art and Charity at C.I.N.H. San Vicente Ferrer (itinerant); and in June, in an Exhibition for the Benefit of UNICEF at the Exhibition Hall of the National Library in Madrid.
In 1966, he was named Illustrious Son of Antella and Adoptive Son of Sumacárcel (Valencia). In September, he participated in the Tribute to Benjamín Palencia at the Town Hall of Monóvar (Alicante), and in Spanish Painting at the Universal Fair of New York.
In 1969, the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia acquired his painting Paisaje Mediterráneo. In March, he held a solo exhibition at Biosca Gallery in Madrid; in April, he took part in Figurative Painters of Contemporary Spain at the Congress and Exhibition Palace in Madrid; and he also exhibited in San Diego and St. Louis (USA).
In 1970, he became a board member of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Provincial Delegate Advisor for Fine Arts. In May, he participated in Today’s Painters in Madrid organized by the F. Estrada-Saladich Foundation in Barcelona.
In January 1971, he participated in the Anthology in Tribute to Don Eugenio d’Ors and His Salons of the Eleven of the Academia Breve de Crítica de Arte at Club Urbis, Madrid. In April, he exhibited The Landscape in Contemporary Spanish Painting at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal. That same year, he took part in First Medals at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and in November in Masters of Landscape at Galanis Gallery, Valencia.
In 1972, he was selected among the Best Spanish Painters of the 20th Century. In February, he held a solo exhibition at Biosca Gallery in Madrid; in June, he participated in Mediterranean Painters at Galanis Gallery in Valencia and in the Red Cross Charity Exhibition in Valencia. In October, he took part in Twenty Years of Spanish Painting (1950–1970) at the Provincial Savings Bank of Alicante, in New Masters at Sur Gallery in Santander, and in Small and Medium Formats in Contemporary Painting at Arteta Gallery in Bilbao. In December, he participated in Spanish Expressionists at Galatheo Gallery in Valencia, in a Tribute to Camón Aznar at Club Urbis in Madrid, and in Masters of Spanish Painting: Small Formats at Punto Gallery in Valencia.
In 1973, he was invited to the Art Course of the Menéndez-Pelayo International University in Santander. In January, he participated in Tribute to Gerardo Diego at Club Urbis in Madrid and in Small Format at Sur Gallery in Santander. In March, he joined an informal group show at Rayuela–Biosca Galleries in Madrid; in April, he took part in Contemporary Masters of Spanish Landscape at Sur Gallery in Santander; in June, in Panorama ’73 at Galatheo Gallery in Valencia; and in November, in the Anthological Exhibition of Spanish Artists, Arte ’73 organized by the Juan March Foundation, which toured the Museum of Contemporary Art in Seville (November 1973), the Palacio de la Lonja in Zaragoza (December 1973), the Salón del Tinell in Barcelona (January 1974), the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao (February 1974), Marlborough Fine Arts in London (March 1974), Espace Pierre Cardin in Paris (April 1974), the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (May 1974), Zunfthaus zur Meisen in Zurich (July 1974), the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Palma de Mallorca (August 1974), and the Juan March Foundation in Madrid (January 1975). He also held a solo exhibition of gouaches, watercolors and acrylics at Rayuela Gallery in Madrid and in December took part in Snow in Contemporary Spanish Painting at Biosca Gallery in Madrid and in Still Life at Galatheo Gallery in Valencia.
In 1974, his mother, Teresa Sanchis Perucho, passed away. He became Consiliario of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos and was recognized as Colossus of the Valencian Country 1973 for the Arts. In March, he participated in Contemporary Masters of Valencian Painting at Arts Gallery in Valencia; in April, in Color in Contemporary Painting at Galatheo Gallery in Valencia; and in May, in an Anthological Exhibition at the National Library Exhibition Hall in Madrid and a solo exhibition at Sur Gallery in Santander. He also exhibited in The Landscape in García Ochoa, Lozano and Martínez Novillo at Giannini Gallery in La Coruña, The Landscape at Rayuela–Biosca Galleries in Madrid in October, Mediterranean Artists at Galatheo Gallery in Valencia in November, and Drawing in the Great Masters at Rayuela Gallery in Madrid.
In 1975, he was selected among the fifteen best Spanish painters and stepped down as Provincial Advisor for Fine Arts. In January, he held a solo exhibition of oils and watercolors at Caledonia Gallery in Bilbao and participated in Homage to Eugenio d’Ors (1881–1954) at Biosca Gallery in Madrid. In April, he held a solo exhibition at Carmen Durango Gallery in Valladolid and participated in Contemporary Spanish Figurative Painting at the Spanish Institute in New York (USA). In May, he exhibited in Individuation of the Landscape at Sala Sta. Catalina–Ateneo de Madrid; in July, he held a solo exhibition of oils and watercolors at Sur Gallery in Santander and took part in The Spanish Landscape at the same gallery. In September, he participated in the Fifth International Biennial of Sports in the Fine Arts organized by the International Olympic Committee in Barcelona; in October, he held a solo exhibition at Proinco Gallery in Alicante; in December, he took part in the First Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid and in Spanish Figurative Painting, organized as an itinerant exhibition by the Directorate General of Artistic and Cultural Heritage.
In 1976, he was appointed Full Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando on May 31. In February, he participated in Towards Nature at Theo Gallery in Valencia and in Around Impressionism at Theo Gallery in Barcelona. In March, he exhibited in Color in the Landscape at La Kábala Gallery in Madrid and in the Third Spring Salon at the Valencia Savings Bank. In April, he took part in Around the Sea at Biosca Gallery in Madrid; in June, in Contemporary Masters at La Kábala Gallery in Madrid; in October, in Chronicle of Post-War Spanish Painting 1940–1960 at Multitud Gallery in Madrid; in November, he held a solo exhibition at Sala Luzán–La Inmaculada Savings Bank in Zaragoza and participated in Still Life at La Kábala Gallery in Madrid; in December, in the Second Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid. He also participated in the First International Exhibition of Plastic Arts at the Castillo de San José Museum in Lanzarote and in Spanish Painting from the Renaissance to the Present Day in Tokyo, Hyogo and Kitakyushu, Japan. That year, he was featured in Masters of Contemporary Spanish Art: Francisco Lozano in the Great Basque Encyclopedia published in Bilbao.

In October, he took part in Contemporary Painting of Spain at Casa de las Américas in Havana, Cuba, and in Levantine Painters at Aitana Gallery in Alicante. In 1981, he held a solo exhibition at Biosca Gallery in Madrid in May and participated that same month in The Effects of Light in Spanish Painting of the 19th and 20th Centuries organized by the Directorate General of Cultural Relations in Brussels, Belgium. In August, he took part in The Rural and Urban Landscape of Spain as Seen by Its Painters at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Santo Domingo. In November and December, he exhibited again in Small Format at Biosca Gallery in Madrid and in the Seventh Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid. He also participated in Valencian Artists of the Avant-Garde of the 1930s at the City Hall of Valencia.
In February 1982, he held a solo exhibition of small formats at Collage Gallery in Madrid; in June, he participated in Tribute to Vázquez Díaz from His Painter Friends at Sala Goya–Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid; in September, he held a solo tribute exhibition in Jávea at Ronda Sur Gallery; in October, he joined Collective October ’82 at Sur Gallery in Santander; and in December, he took part in the Eighth Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid.
In 1983, he was named Adoptive Son of the City of Xàtiva. In January, he participated in Small Treasures for Great Museums at Sur Gallery in Santander; in May, in Panorama ’83 at Theo Gallery in Valencia; in June, in Art-Solidarity at the Civil Government of Valencia; in July, in Valencian Artists at Ronda Sur Gallery in Jávea; and in December, in the Ninth Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid.
In 1984, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Valencia. In May, he held a solo exhibition at Theo–Cuatro Galleries in Valencia; in November, he participated in Homage to the Painters of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando at Alfama Gallery in Madrid; and in December, he took part in the Tenth Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid.
In 1985, he became Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, Valencia, and was appointed a member of the Council of Culture of the Generalitat Valenciana. In January, he participated in Meeting with Drawing at Alfama Gallery in Madrid; in May, in Juana Mordó. For Art at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid; and in December, he was honored with the exhibition Lozano i el seu poble at the Town Hall of Antella. That year he also joined the Eleventh Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid and held a solo exhibition at Charpa Gallery in Gandía (Valencia).
In 1986, a street in the city of Torrente (Valencia) was named “Pintor Francisco Lozano” in his honor. In February, he participated in Project for a Collection at Theo Gallery in Valencia; in April, in A Collection of Landscapes at Juan Gris Gallery in Madrid; in December, in Still Life at Alfama Gallery in Madrid and in Oils, Watercolors and Drawings at Juan Gris Gallery in Madrid; and in the Twelfth Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid.
In 1987, he received the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia and became a Full Academician of the Royal Academy of Valencian Culture. In November, he participated in Painters and Sculptors of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando at Alfama Gallery in Madrid and in December in Large Format – Small Format at Theo Gallery in Valencia and the Fifteenth Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid.
In 1990, he received the Gold Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Valencia. In March, he participated in The Vallecas School and the Renewal of the Landscape at the Centro Cultural Villa de Madrid; in June, in Espacio 90 at Theo Gallery in Valencia, Small Works by Great Artists at Alfama Gallery in Madrid, collective exhibitions at Benlliure Gallery and Puchol Gallery in Valencia, and in September, in Masters in Gabernia at Gabernia Gallery in Valencia. In December, he took part in Small Format at Biosca Gallery in Madrid, Twenty Years Theo Valencia at Theo Gallery in Valencia, the Sixteenth Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid, and in a charity art auction benefiting the Asilo Hermanitas Ancianos Desamparados organized by the Rotary Club of Valencia.
In 1991, he delivered his reception address at the Royal Academy of Valencian Culture titled Bétera: A Village. Notes from a Painter. In January, he joined Collective 1991 at Benlliure Gallery in Valencia; in March, the Fifth Benlliure Exhibition at the same gallery; and in the Tribute by the City Council of Madrid to Camilo José Cela at the Centro Cultural Conde Duque in Madrid. In June, he participated again in Small Works by Great Artists at Alfama Gallery in Madrid, the Summer Collective at Benlliure Gallery in Valencia, and in December, the Seventeenth Annual Sketch in Art Exhibition at Balboa-13 Gallery in Madrid and in the Banco Hispanoamericano Collection at the Banco Hispanoamericano Foundation in Madrid.
In 1992, he participated in a collective exhibition at Benlliure Gallery in Valencia in January; in February, in the Permanent Collection of the IVAM at IVAM in Valencia and in ARCO ’92 with Theo Gallery Valencia at IFEMA in Madrid. In April, he exhibited in Selection of Works from the Pinacoteca of the Cía. Valenciana de Cementos Portland at IVAM–Centre del Carme in Valencia, and the Fifth Benlliure Exhibition at Benlliure Gallery in Valencia. In June, he participated in Interpreters of the Landscape: From the Vallecas School to the Madrid School at Sur Gallery in Santander; in September, in the 25th Anniversary at San Vicente Gallery in Valencia; and in December, in Small and Medium Format at Puchol Gallery in Valencia.
In 1993, he was named “Importante de Levante-EMV” and the King and Queen of Spain visited his exhibition Lozano. The Invention of a Landscape at IVAM Julio González Center in Valencia. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. In April, he presented the retrospective Lozano. The Invention of a Landscape at IVAM Julio González Center in Valencia and a solo exhibition Francisco Lozano at Theo Gallery in Valencia. In September, he held another solo exhibition at the Casa de Cultura–Town Hall of Altea, Alicante.
In 1994, he was invested as Doctor Honoris Causa by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He was awarded the Gold Medal at Artesantander for A Lifetime of Artistic Creation and received the prize for Best Exhibition for The Invention of a Landscape at the 9th Edition of the National Visual Arts Awards by Correo del Arte. In May, he participated in A Century of Valencian Painting. 1880–1980 at the IVAM Julio González Center in Valencia, and in August, he exhibited at Artesantander with Benlliure-Valencia Gallery in Santander.
