Dr. Enrique Iglesia has been actively engaged in the development of catalysts and catalytic processes of industrial interest. Among his major research areas, his highly original contributions to the conversion of methanol and dimethyl ether into oxygenated compounds stand out. This work has been published in prestigious scientific journals and has also resulted in patents with the company BP, which is currently pursuing its commercial development.

Another of his key research areas involves the activation of methane, from reforming processes to the Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis of hydrocarbons. It could be said that the EXXON technology in FT has been largely developed through the efforts of Dr. Iglesia. His work and patents in this field are considered essential reading for any researcher interested in the FT process.

Among his most notable projects is the design of catalysts with isolated active centers based on V⁵⁺ and oxo-Re species anchored on ZSM-5 zeolites, resulting in unprecedented catalytic systems.
