Antonio Pellicer
Spanish obstetrician and gynecologist. Founder and co-president of the Valencian Institute of Infertility, he is a full professor at the University of Valencia and has been president of the Spanish Fertility Society.
Born in Gandia in 1955, Antonio Pellicer is one of the most prominent specialists in assisted reproduction, both in Spain and internationally. He has been a key pioneer in this field of medicine and enjoys unanimous recognition from the global scientific community. For his work and international influence, he has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Rey Jaime I Prize for Medical Research in 2004. Among his many achievements, one of the most significant is the founding of the world’s first institute dedicated to assisted reproduction: the IVI – Valencian Institute of Infertility.
Today, he is considered a global leader not only in fertility techniques, but also in preimplantation genetic diagnosis, a procedure that helps prevent the transmission of genetic diseases from parents to children.
He earned his degree in Medicine from the University of Valencia in 1978 and obtained his PhD in 1980 from the same institution, where he was appointed Associate Professor in 1986. He specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Hospital Clínico de Valencia under Dr. Fernando Bonilla, and furthered his expertise in reproductive medicine at Yale University (USA) and Mainz University (Germany).
He was awarded the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Valencia in 1999, and he is currently the Dean of its Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, as well as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Doctor Peset Hospital in Valencia.
In 1990, together with Dr. José Remohí and a team of professionals from the Hospital Clínico de Valencia, and with the support of Dr. Fernando Bonilla, he founded the Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad (IVI), which he continues to lead in shared presidency with Dr. Remohí.
Professor Pellicer is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology and of the International Federation of Fertility Societies. He served as President of the Spanish Fertility Society from 1994 to 1996 and sits on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. In 2003, he was appointed member of the Spanish National Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction.
He has given presentations at 58 national and 196 international conferences, and in 2008, he became a full member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Valencian Community.
