The Rector has opened his speech with a message of support to society, highlighting that “from the university we will always work with society, from our most technical fields of knowledge, to help ensure that railway accidents like the one on January 18 do not happen again.”
José Capilla has recalled the relevance of ETSINF in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence, noting that “computer science is a discipline that is living one of its best moments. The great advance did not come from doing more, but from knowing where to focus attention.” He has also highlighted historical milestones such as the publication of the article “Attention is all you need”, which introduced the Transformer architecture and changed the way intelligent systems are built.
The Rector has stressed the international projection of ETSINF, stating that “in this global context, the Universitat Politècnica de València is also present. Our project of the China campus, the Beihang Valencia Polytechnic Institute, has responded precisely to this conviction. ETSINF will play a key role, thus helping to project UPV’s academic model and knowledge in a high-level international context.”
Regarding the challenges of artificial intelligence, José Capilla has highlighted that “we are currently immersed in a true race for artificial intelligence… What has been indisputable is that artificial intelligence has become a first-level geopolitical factor, with the conviction that whoever dominates this field will have a decisive position in the coming decades.”
The Rector has concluded by reaffirming his support for the new director and the academic community, stating that “Director, dear Andrés, you have the backing of the Rectorate and a solid and committed academic community. I wish you great success in this new stage, and I thank all of you for continuing to make this School and this University a space of excellence, innovation, and public responsibility.”
